Yeah, I decided a couple of months ago that the next computer I get will be running Ubuntu.
I'm still struggling with what possible practical value it'll have for me, but my friend Jared pointed out that Firefox really wasn't a big deal either -- until you started using it.
Well, in my case it's mostly an aversion to Vista. But as for the OpenGL desktop action, the value of that is obvious: to me it's a substitute for having loads of screen real estate, which is extremely undervalued if you're the insane multitasking type like I sometimes am.

I can hardly multitask. But I do usually take up a great many projects simultaneously when I set down to do something with coffee.
I couldn't dream of freeware OS at the moment. I'm not much of a programmer, and any mention of a kernel drives me to the belfry
Vista is pretty amazing...if that is all you want to run. Any program that can be used as a tool for creativity (i.e. anything Adobe) is eaten and destroyed by Vista.
Ubuntu is VERY easy to learn. It is the Linux distro for those who do not know what a distro is.
Now BSD systems on the other hand...
